Dance duo casebolt and smith deconstruct their creative process in an evening of brash humor, lightning-quick repartee, show tunes and imaginative choreography, demonstrating what dancers can, can't and won't do as a commentary on their own limitations and fear of becoming unoriginal. Speaking directly to the audience and singing while dancing, the performance is layered with pop culture references- a complex and hilarious glimpse into the minds and pants of the performers.

"casebolt and smith bring intimacy and directness, and a seriousness of purpose warmly wrapped in physicality, playfulness and humour.  They have the rare quality of a light, but sharp political edge in their work, which entertains as it makes you think and re-think."

FRUIT FLY starring Leslie Jordan (thru February 18)

Do gay men become their mothers? That is the question asked in Leslie Jordan's hilarious and touching new romp, FRUIT FLY. Mr. Jordan travels back in time using show-and-tell to take the audience on the ride of a lifetime. Childhood recollections combine with perilous teenage shenanigans. From the day a teenage Leslie sits down with his poor, clueless mother to inform her that he has decided to forego college to become a female impersonator, all the way to a Gay Alaskan Cruise on which a 53-year-old Mr. Jordan witnesses his aging mother's astounding metamorphosis (and whose only real concern about a gay cruise to Alaska is that she doesn't want to go ice fishing), Mr. Jordan is in his element. His storytelling skills abound and will make for an evening of fun and thought-provoking theater.

January 6 – February 18, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays at 8pm; Sundays at 3pm

Celebration Theatre - 7051B Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90038

Foothill Blvd., Azusa.  Exit the 210 Freeway at Irwindale Ave, go north, turn left on Foothill Blvd (Irwindale ends at Foothill and the rock quarry).  On Foothill drive approximately 1/4 mile to the entrance on the right side of the street.  Watch for the Lario sign -- it's easy to miss.  If you go over the river, you've gone too far.  Once you've turned into the park, continue down the driveway to the parking lot.  We'll meet at the picnic tables.

Dog's Day Out

Will Rogers State Park Hike
Fitness Trainer and WOAR Advisory Board Member Terri West will lead this moderate hike through Will Rogers State Historic Park.

Sunday, January 29
9am

Will Rogers, often called the "Cowboy Philosopher," bought a spread in the Santa Monica Mountains in 1922. He and his family enlarged their weekend cottage to 31 rooms. The Oklahoma-born Rogers toured the country as a trick roper, punctuating his act with humorous comments on the news of the day. His roping act led the humorist to later fame as a newspaper columnist, radio commentator and movie star. Today, the ranch and grounds of the Rogers Ranch is maintained as Will Rogers State Historic Park, set aside in 1944. You can see a short film on Rogers's life at the park visitor center and tour the ranch house, still filled with his prized possessions. Rogers himself designed the riding trails that wind into the hills behind his ranch. The path to Inspiration Point is an easy walk for the whole family.

The hike: Join the path near the tennis courts west of park headquarters and begin ascending north into the mountains. (You'll see a couple of different trails; join the main, wide bridle path.)
Rogers Trail ascends a ridge overlooking nearby Rivas Canyon and leads to a junction, where you take the turnoff for Inspiration Point. Not really a point at all, it's actually more of a flat-topped knoll; nevertheless, clear-day views are inspiring: the Santa Monica Bay, the metropolis, the San Gabriel Mountains, and even Catalina Island. Dogs on leash are allowed.

Directions to trailhead: From Sunset Boulevard in Pacific Palisades, 4.5 miles inland from Sunset's junction with Pacific Coast Highway, turn inland on the access road leading to Will Rogers State Historic Park. Park your car near the polo field or near Rogers' house.

Price: Members FREE; Nonmembers $5

MLK KINGDOM DAY PARADE - Monday, January 16, 2012

Map: http://kingdomdayparadecore-ca.org/map.pdf

http://www.myblackpridela.com/home/mlkparade2012

http://www.jordanrustinla.org/

Jordan/Rustin CoalitionThere are many events scheduled in the Los Angeles area to commemorate the 2012 National Martin Luther King Day. The forecast does not include rain so that is the perfect recipe for a parade in honor of the Civil Rights icon, whose 83rd birthday was on January 15th.

Parade Route

The Rose Bowl parade is considered the “Granddaddy” of all parades.  In the Los Angeles area the Kingdom Day parade has earned the distinction as the premiere processionhonoring the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., who was gunned down at the young age of 39.

President Ronald Reagan signed the law on November 2, 1983, making the birthday of Dr. King a national holiday.

Now in its 25th year the annual Kingdom Day parade will stroll down the boulevard named after Dr. King, Martin Luther King Boulevard starting at Western Avenue and streaming west down the 3 mile trek, ending at historic Leimert Park in the Crenshaw district.

The parade has been a community favorite since its inception.  People have been known to come from communities all over the greater Los Angeles area to participate in the family themed event designed to showcase the enthusiasm and respect parade participants have for a person very few of them saw in person.  Lining the streets to cheer on the floats, marching bands, dignitaries and celebrities, the crowd is projected to be in the neighborhood of 2 million.

The parade kicks off at 10:15 am sharp and KABC-TV, channel 7 will start live filming at 11:00am sharp.  They also will be providing live streaming via computer, tablets, Smartphone and other devices capable of viewing live broadcast.

Bayard Rustin
As people across the country honor the life and legacy of the Reverend Dr. Martin Luther King, we at IMRU want to take some time to also honor the gay man that advised him, worked beside him and in many ways defined the tone of the African American civil rights movement, Bayard Rustin. A man who dedicated his life to pushing for equality in all forms, Bayard Rustin spent three years in jail as a conscientious objector during World War and later traveled to India to study Ghandi's method of non-violent protest. Then, in 1955, Rustin met the young Rev. King and together helped lead the famous bus boycott of Montgomery, Alabama. Rustin went on to become the chief organizer of the 1963 Civil Rights March on Washington. Bayard Rustin never lost his conviction that equality should be pursued through non-violent means. And the march which he organized is widely credited as a major factor leading to the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the National Voting Rights Act of 1965. Bayard Rustin died quietly over 23 years ago on August 24, 1987, and on this edition of IMRU we remember him.

Coming to the Renberg - January 2012!

JACKIE HOFFMAN starring in JACKIE FIVE-OH!

Written by Jackie Hoffman and Michael Schiralli

Directed by Michael Schiralli

Where the heck has Jackie been?? It’s been seven long years since the great "Broadway broad" Jackie Hoffman blew the roof off the Renberg in a solo show. The Renberg Theatre is thrilled to announce that she’s coming back! The star of Broadway's Hairspray, Xanadu and The Addams Family Musical returns with an all-new show—JACKIE FIVE-OH! The bitterly funny actor-comic muses about her own decay as she reaches the big Five-Oh and unflinchingly skewers such sacred cows as the Tony Awards and Holocaust movies while she flings acid-dipped barbs at the Broadway hierarchy and does painfully accurate imitations of a gallery of showbiz icons, including Bernadette Peters and Mary Tyler Moore.

Mercilessly acerbic and devastatingly funny … the diminutive Hoffman’s bigger-than-life presence electrifies the stage.” –LA Times

Savagely funny” -NY Times

Hilariously grumpy” -TimeOut New York

Karger beats Bachman by 138 votes in NH

Fred Karger

The New Hampshire Secretary of State’s office corrected vote totals in the New Hampshire primary and openly gay candidate Fred Karger received 485 votes to Minnesota Congresswoman Michele Bachmann’s 347. The original vote tally had Karger trailing Bachmann, who dropped out of the race after her last-place finish in Iowa, by three votes. Karger received votes in every New Hampshire county.

“Congresswoman Bachmann was in 12 national debates, raised $10 to $12 million, received massive news coverage, has huge name ID and we beat her in New Hampshire,” Karger wrote in an email blast to supporters today. “She and I had been tied in several recent New Hampshire polls. Early last month I said that I wanted to beat Santorum or Bachmann in New Hampshire. It’s a big win for me.”

Karger is skipping the South Carolina and Florida primaries. From New Hampshire he headed to Michigan, which holds its primary on Feb. 28.

“There are only seven Republicans still in the running on that ballot and [I] am sure there will be a few less after South Carolina and Florida,” he said. “I will be competing in [the] Michigan Primary no matter what.”

Friday the thirteenths have long been associated with Wall Street and Stock Market crashes.

In 1907, eccentric Boston stockbroker Thomas Lawson published a book called Friday the Thirteenth, which told of a devious broker’s endeavor to take advantage of the superstition to create a Wall Street panic.

Members of Occupy Los Angeles (OLA) believe that Bank of New York Mellon (BNYM) has created its own panics with Americans and Occupiers through real and threatened foreclosures and evictions.

BNYM has wrongfully foreclosed upon both 79-year-old retired school teacher, Faith Park of South Central, and on 63-year-old Chaplain Bertha Herrera of Van Nuys. BNYM event evicted the Chaplain last week and members of OLA were there when the Sheriff’s Deputies entered the home with weapons drawn.  Members of Occupy LA have rallied around these two families.

These families remain in a panic as the banks wrongfully take all they have.

As if that wasn’t enough, early this week, BNYM went to court in Pennsylvania with a lawsuit and companion injunction to make Occupy Pittsburgh anti-wall-street protesters leave a downtown bank-owned green space, known as Mellon Green.

BNYM feared a confrontation with the Occupiers in Pittsburgh.

Well, now they have a confrontation with Occupiers around the country.  OLA has reached out to other occupations in each one of the cities that BNYM has offices in and invited them to join in on their Friday-the-13th-day-of-bad-luck protests against BNYM.

For those supporters who cannot physical be at a protest outside a BNYM office, member of OLA plan to provide them with phone numbers to call to express their protests to the bank and government officials. On Friday at 11am, members of OLA, Occupy the Hood, and the community will rally outside BNYM’s downtown Los Angeles office building on the corner of 4th and Hope Street.

These protests come as BNYM works out a settlement with the U.S. Attorney’s office to settle a lawsuit accusing the bank of overcharging customers and pension holders on foreign currency transactions. The bank has been involved in numerous lawsuits over the years and has settled for multi-millions.
